I haven't been blogging because someone stole my computer. Yes, I am quite serious! In fact, the same someone also stole my camera, my jewelry, my hair-cutting kit, my car (we got it back), our stash of Cap'n Crunch, and a slew of other things.
It's been over a month since the robbery, so it hasn't always been this easy to joke about it. The news brought with it a slew of emotions from resignation--it's just "things"--to defilement to fear. But the Holy Spirit comforted my heart by bringing these verses to mind in the early days:
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21
and
"For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." 2 Corinthians 5:1
and
"Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed ; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions." Luke 12:15
The house is cleaned up, insurance is coming in handy, and our naivete has been given a harsh check. We have a new security system, and we are taking more precautions in general. We're blessed in that our thief was caught and is getting tried. But, more than trusting in the justice system, there's one more verse to rest in, and it's the one I painted on Gemma's wall:
"In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8

I didn't know they caught the thief! That's good news, I hope he gets help in prison so he can get on the straight and narrow!
ReplyDeleteWow, that would be scary
ReplyDeleteYes, it's God who keeps us safe. Thanks for the reminder. Praying for you. FYI: I sing that Psalm to Charis every night before she goes to bed.
ReplyDeleteGretchen, this entry is one of the most mature, God-centered blogs I think I've ever read. Life has a way of beating us up. The Man of Sorrows knew a life of hardship and was Himself a target of criminal activity. Your identity with Him in this unfortunate scenario is refreshing.

love,
Dad
I am sorry to hear that you had to go through that. It's such an invasion and can make you feel so vulnerable. I am glad that your faith has helped you cope.
